Mechanical Design Engineer
Build real flight hardware for space—own mechanical design from concept to orbit in a fast-moving deep tech startup shaping the future of in-orbit services.
About Vimotek
Vimotek is a space company, recently named to Ny Teknik’s 33 List as one of Sweden’s most promising technology startups. The company works to de-risk spacecraft proximity operations, accelerate time-to-orbit, and enable the scaling of in-orbit services.
Vimotek equips engineering and operations teams with leading dual-use solutions for in-space automation within two closely connected and complementary domains:
Digital Twins of Spacecraft for Mission Simulation and Validation
AI-Driven Sensing, Perception and Control
Your role
You will play a key role in developing Vimotek’s in-space automation products for onboard sensing, perception, control, and robotics. These are real hardware products moving from prototype to flight-ready delivery.
As Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the mechanical design as part of a multidisciplinary team, working alongside colleagues in systems engineering, electronics, optics, software, and test/assembly to bring the product to life.
You will also contribute to establishing practical tools and ways of working for mechanical development in a space startup environment.
You will:
Design housings and subassemblies for compact sensing units
Own mechanical interfaces to sensors, electronics, harnessing, and customer spacecraft mounting points
Drive design for manufacturing by selecting processes, simplifying assembly, building in alignment features, and ensuring repeatability
Create manufacturing-ready documentation, including drawings, tolerances, materials and finishes, BOMs, and assembly notes
Support prototyping and bring-up through build and fit checks, root-cause analysis, and fast iterations
Participate in assembly, integration, and test (AIT) of engineering models and the first flight model
Help establish lightweight mechanical working methods, including templates, part numbering, revision control, and a practical PDM approach
Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure parts are produced correctly and to improve designs based on feedback
Required skills and qualifications
Strong hands-on experience taking mechanical designs from concept to CAD to drawings to prototypes to manufacturing
Experience designing compact electromechanical products, such as sensor products, robotics, industrial devices, medical devices, automotive systems, or aerospace products
Solid design-for-manufacturing mindset, including tolerance strategy, fastening and alignment features, and practical assembly considerations
Ability to create clear manufacturing packages, including drawings with tolerances, materials and finishes, BOMs, and assembly documentation
Comfortable working cross-functionally with systems and electronics engineers and handling interface trade-offs
Experience working with and setting up PDM/PLM tools
Self-driven and structured, with the ability to set priorities, build routines, and make steady progress in a startup environment
Bonus skills
Space or aerospace mechanical design experience
Opto-mechanics experience, including lens assemblies, sensor alignment, mounts, and stray light baffles or covers
Experience preparing hardware for environmental testing, such as vibration, shock, and thermal cycling, and working with test houses
Basic thermal and structural awareness for harsh environments, with support from external specialists for detailed analysis
Familiarity with contamination control and clean handling around optics and sensors
The company’s primary language is English, and proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
